cannot type letter b in terminal

now this is strange: I can type the letter 'b' anywhere but in the command prompt: I can even type it to remove the menu bar after alt+v. I can type an uppercase B, but no 'b'. here is my bash_history last few commands... nothing strange.

digg
pandora
cd ogg
mkdir beatles
cp *Beatles* beatles
pandora
cd ogg
fire

more evidence:
when I open a new tab and operate under it, hitting the b key switches me back to the first tab

maybe it's useful to know that i've changed the key shortcuts in terminal to ctrl+tab to switch tabs, ctrl+w to close a tab etc, but nothing involving the 'b' key

really weird. And nobody ever had a theory as to what caused it?

it's all over now. I upgraded to dapper beta with dist-upgrade, after which X wouldn't start. I went back and forth to a dapper liveCD for internet to try different things, and it just kinda started working 'on its own'. And now that X is back, so is the letter 'b'.
