Cannot su root on fresh install on RH9

I cannot su root on RH9. Just installed last night. Basically it goes like this:

>> su root
>> password
>> <I enter my pasword here>
<RH just hangs forever on this blank line just below passwrd entry>

Any suggestions??? I have shadow passwords installed BTW.

Just to be clear, is that 'su' followed by a hyphen?
