Cannot start X after kernel recompile

Ive just recompiled the stock Slackware 10 kernel following DaOnes instructions from the Linux Distributions > Slackware forum, and when i try to reboot my machine i get the error:

Code:

I cannot start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
I say yes:

Code:

NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
Screen(s) found, but none have a usuable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Code:

Would you like to view the detailed X server output as well?
Yes..

The appropriate part is
Code:

(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a

Code:

I will disable this X server for now. Restart GDM when it is configured correctly.
Then im just left with the text console, with all the messages from boot time, the last one being "Starting up X11 session manager..." with the cursor flashing underneath it.

I can type in text but pressing enter just gives me a new line, its not a shell ive been brought back to.

The first thing i typed was "make xconfig" when doing the recompiling, shouldnt this have used my previous settings for the nvidia stuff?

Doesnt seem like i have any way to fix this!

And advice?

Thanks.

Ok i used knoppix and changed the default runlevel in /etc/inittab to level 3, text mode. Now i can boot to a useable shell, so any suggestions about what i should be editing would be much appriciated.

Cheers.

SOLVED

Ok, its working now. I had to reinstall the nvidia kernel module, the readme from the nvidia site for the linux driver for the card says that the module must be compiled for each specific kernel compilation.

I could do with some advice here, does this then mean that i must reinstall my nvidia module every time i make a change to my kernel? :(

Probably, but then how often would you recompile your kernel!?
