I'm in over my head. I've looked as best I can but I need some help. What I THINK the problem is, is that I changed the computer name in the mepis start center from mepis 1 to Sid 2.6.17, because everything has pretty much been changed from Mepis. Anyway, the error I recieve when I try to start anything accociated with kde is:
There was an error setting up inter-process communications for kde. The message returned by the system was:
Could not read network connection list.
/home/sleekmason/dcopserver_Sid2.6.17__0
Please check that the dcopserver program is running!
Alright, Then I go to a term and type "dcopserver" and what I get is:
/usr/bin/iceauth: /tmp/dcopPfMg8b:1: bad "add" command line
/usr/bin/iceauth: /tmp/dcopPfMg8b:2: bad "add" command line
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed
ICE Connection rejected!

DCOPServer self-test failed.

Alright. I am now in over my head, and cant even get into kde( i'm in Flux.) to try to change back the computer name to see if that works. I am lost at the moment, and would appreciate help if I can get it.
This is just a guess, but I would delete the dcopserver_Sid2.6.17__0 file. The dcopserver should recreate it. I had a dcopserver problem a long time ago and I deleted some dcopserver file in the /tmp directory and it fixed it.
Hell, I deleted ALL of the tmp files to no success, but yes, I think that would have taken care of the problem. What I wound up doing was copying everything, and buying a linux mag with Ubuntu 6.06 . . . so far it cant even begin to compare with straight Debian. I will switch again with a new Deb release in a mag. I had the option of mepis as well, but I used the earlier version(which by the way was great) but I hadnt tried unbuntu, Which by the way I found out means "crappy version of Debian" in some obscure african language Right now I just need some decent repositories and a Fluxbox install and I'm back in business!

.. is due to the space in your new hostname "Sid 2.6..". I had a space in my hostname which caused the same error, I removed it and no longer get the error.
You can edit your hostname in /etc/conf.d/hostname I also restarted to ensure the changes took effect.
I had the same problem; this the way I fixed it...
Check you don't have any spaces in hostname (System->Administration->Network->General). If so, change blanks to underscores, got to /home/user dir (enable Show Hidden Files) and delete both DCOPserver_xxxxx files, then restart the system.
