HiYa --- Am trying to test some (VERY) basic email setups within a single RedHat 8 Machine.

I am trying to email user: Max from User Root using Ximian Evolution using SMTP (Evo does not like Sendmail for some odd reason).

My receiving Mail for both accounts is set to Standard Unix Mbox Spools @ /var/spool/mail/USER

My Host for SMTP is set to:-

plum.ambientaether.net (my HOSTNAME)


When I try to send I get:-

"Error while 'Sending "Test Message":
Could not connect to plum.ambientaether.net (port 25):
Connection Refused.

Not sure if this is relevant but I ran nmap against plum.ambientaether.net and port 25 did not show --- do I need to configure it in any way?

do you own the domain ambientaether.net?

if you don't you can't do it that way! You will have to use your ip address.

this is the ip i came up with when doing an nslookup on ambientaether.net:
207.44.162.39

is that your ip? and do you have a mail server setup on that ip?

Yup I own ambientaether.net

However at the moment its not even an issue but I still cannot get the machine to access the internet (seperate nightmare).

hhhmmm Well I know I have sendmail coz during startup I see a line which bizaarly enough says:-

"starting sendmail" --- however I know Evolution does not like Sendmail and wants SMTP --- can you suggest a mailserver which I should use for that?
