Hi,
What Linux distro are you using? xmms may be configured to use OSS while your system may be using ALSA for sound. Check the configuration settings for xmms, particularly which output plugin you are using.

Right click on XMMS main window > Options > Preferences. (Or ctrl+p from main window) Play around with the Output Plugin until something works.

Do you have more than one sound card? I seem to remember I had a similar problem when I was trying to use multiple sound systems (onboard sound and PCI card) but I couldn't figure out the problem so I just took the card out.

You probably need to have only one player open at a time in case your sound card cannot support multiple source mixing (or whatever it's called)

You may have program open that is hogging the sound card. You could try using lsof to identify what has the sound device open.

lsof /dev/dsp0 (or whatever your sound device is called).

Jim
