Cannot Play Cd's On Linux 9 And Mp3
 

I WANT TO PLAY CD'S AND MP3 USING LINUX 9,BUT THE IS NO SOUND COMING OUT.IF ANY ONE CAN HELP WITH SOME TUTORIALS OR DOCUMENTATION TO HELP ME.BECAUSE ITS THE FIRST TIME USING LINUX ANY IF COULD BE HELPFUL."CAUSE I'M STUCK.

First, all caps posts are not pleasant, stop yelling. :)
Second, we need a little more information. Can't play MP3s while true, doesn't tell us anything. Can't play mp3s in XMMS, NoAtun, etc, that gives us a starting point.

CDs - check to see if the thin cable is connected to your sound card. It is required.
MP3s - what prog are you using?
Mixer - Open your mixer and make sure that all levels are turned up.
Under configuration - Does your sound card show up, does the test sound play?
Documentation - Have you been through the help files that came with/are installed with your system on configuring sound?

I have also problem with the playing mp3 and CDs.
I can play the test sound of the sound card.
And every thing related hardware is OK because I get the playing of all that with window xp(the other os on my pc).

I also got the error"nautilus has not installed with the viewer capable of displaying this"

Well, for CDs, you have to make sure that the thin cable connecting the CD to the sound card is there. CDs will play in Windows without it, but not generally in Linux. The nautilus error, I suspect Gnone with Redhat? MP3 support is not included in Redhat. Visit xmms.org, and download the XMMS version for your distro that has MP3 support, then tie that app to the mime type in Nautilus.

Lets go right back to the beginning--- right you can get some sound so your sound card presumably is working.

Now try getting the Mixer to show on the screen -- I think it's Aumix or something like that --- if you've got a ptcture of a little loudspeaker on the right hand corner of the screen right mouse click in that -- under properties -- or show mixer enable that and you'll see the mixer on the screen.

Check that the volume of the CD isn't zero or the option has been muted.

Check also that the sliders are not all at zero. Some cd volume is controlled via the WAVE sound rather than the CD button.

I had a problem in not getting any sound out of KWINTV until I saw the Mixer had defaulted the sound level to zero.


If you have a Line Input on your sound card plug in a jack -- put your fingers on the other end (phono plug) and see which slider you have to move to get the system to make a humming noise.

This should tell you that at least your sound card is working. If it is your CD's will play OK.

As for MP3's -- for me I can't help you here -- I find the quality of MP3's HORRIBLE -- so I probably enjoy different music (JS Bach, Mozart etc) but a DAB radio plugged into the line input of my sound card work very well.

If you can't get the mixer to work then it's a problem with the sound card -- post what hcard hare you using and we'll see what sound module you'll need.

The more information you can give in describing your problem the more chance you will get of being able to get help.
