Cannot open root device

I installed the new stable verion of 2.6.0 kernel and when i booted i got such error:
VFS:Cannot open root device "hdb8" or hdb8
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on hdb8
Im using Grub as my loader and distro is Slackware 9.1.

title Slackware Linux (2.6.0)
        root (hd1,4)
        kernel /bzImage-2.6.0 ro root=/dev/hdb8
I changed the root=/dev/hdb8 to root (1,7) but only the error msg changed. hdb8 is ReiserFS. Any suggestions?

The root= parameter should be in kernel-readable format, so /dev/hdb8 is ok.
Have a look at this thread, it regards exactly the same problem:
