Cannot open ods files in Kspread

I have an ods file that I created in Open Office on my home Kubuntu box. When I try to open it in Kspread, it is illegible. When I try to cut and copy its contents from OOo to Kspread, all the columns are crushed into the A column in Kspread with a box character seperating what were supposed to be individual columns.

Why the problems, and how can I resolve them? I thought that ods is supposed to work across office suits.

Thanks in advance.

Are you running an old version of Kspread? I haven't got KOffice installed so I can't check versions but you definitely need the one which was released about the same time as OOo 2.0.

It's version 1.4.1, which I installed yesterday via apt-get. So everyone else on a Debian system must be running about the same thing.

KOffice 1.4 had OD supported added on during its lifecycle. The current version is 1.5 and this is the one with ODF built in.

See http://www.koffice.org/news.php

This is available in Debian Unstable so the apt-get it you will need to point to Unstable - which may have consquences on your total installation.

Alternatively get it separately from the KDE site.

Either way you could have some problems because of dependencies so if you want to remain in Testing I'd suggest you wait till Koffice 1.5 is moved to testing.

Thanks. I guess that I'll stay with OOo until Koffice 1.5 comes out. Thanks for pointing out the differences between 1.4 and 1.5.
