Cannot load a song into playlist in xmms

I have been looking all day for an answer to this and have tried many things, but I still am unable to load a song into xmms playlist.

I know this is doable with RH8 because I was doing it not too long ago. Then I reinstalled RH8 with all packages and now I am not successful. I wish I had never done that, as I have other problems also, like not being able to keep the damn Packages window open--I'd like to remove kaboodle. I think it may have something to do with some of my multimedia problems.

Anyway, can anyone offer some suggestions regarding how to load a song into xmms? I finally got LimeWire installed and running, but it's not doing me any good until I can play a song.

Cheers!

If everything is installed correctly, make sure the file names (possibly attributes?) are correct.. like a .mp3 extension on it, for example. I know XMMS wont play unless it has the .mp3 extension there even though it is an MP3. Try another media player and see if that'll work, too..

Good point that you bring up...

Noatun doesn't play it; nor does Audio Player. The file(s) is/are, in fact, .mp3

And the stock xmms that ships with RH8.0 does not play MP3 files. Go to http://freshrpms.net/ and follow the links to the RH8 area and grab xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p.i386.rpm. RH removed support for packages that had MP3 capabilities due to patent and licensing problems.

Then you should have no problems.

I should have mentioned that I have already done that. Still no luck loading a song.

If you are running RH 8+ then you'll need to go here:
http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.2.7-rh8-rh9-rpm/

OR

http://www.redhat.com/advice/speaks_80mm.html

Or, the source of all this info:
http://www.xmms.org (halfway down the page)

Cool
