I'll start from the top:

On Linux, each user has a set of privileges: things they are allowed to do. Linux has a Super User, known as "root", who has all privileges. Most Linux distributions only allow root to install software, so to install software, you need to switch to user root "s(uper)u(ser) -".

However, "su -" isn't working. Try "sudo -i" (Super User DO), and type YOUR password. You may have been given permission to do anything root can, as long as you confirm that you are SURE and that you didn't leave the computer and that someone else isn't using it as you.
