cannot find xev

Hello, I have Mandriva 2005 LE (KDE) and try to use "xev". But obviously it is not in my distribution. Even I cannot find it on any website to download. I know it is part of XFree86 or X.Org but I am unable to get it. I need it to make my media keyboard useful.

If somebody can help me, thanx

Try reading: http://www.xfree86.org/current/xev.1.html and if you still have a problem kindly repost your question.

Cheers

thank you, but...

You sent me the manual page link... It won't help me much. There isn't a "xev" in my distro. I am sure. I do can use shell, I'm not such beginner. I just didn't know how to get it. Now I know. But I don't know if I have XFree86 or X.Org...

I think I can't download and reinstall XFree86 if I have X.org. Need to find out which of these I have. Please, save me

Here are a couple more googled items:

http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Xev

http://webcvs.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xev/

It looks to me that the later URL will allow you to download what you need. I am assuming that you require xev to check on, or debug, you X Server settings for your mouse and/or keyboard since my only experience with x events is when I was trying to setup the non-keyboard buttons on my laptop(s) and to set the sideways scroll (pan) on my Logitech MxLazer 1000 mouse.

Hope this helps

re:

Thank you very much I found something like xserver..blahblah.rpm, it should have xev inside, download it, trying to install but.... I am using Slovak language, so I don't know if I translate it right. Hope you understand. Message on my screen after command urpmi blah blah:

Next packages have wrong signatures:
xorg-x11-server-6.8.2-7.2.102mdk.i586.rpm: Wrong signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG#26752624 NOT OK)

It is possible to ignore it?

I use command from your second link, but it didn't look friendly. I wrote it and screen:

cvs checkout: warning: failed to open /root/.cvspass for reading: No such file or directory
cvs checkout: Updating app/xev
U app/xev/.cvsignore
U app/xev/AUTHORS
U app/xev/COPYING
U app/xev/ChangeLog
U app/xev/INSTALL
U app/xev/Makefile.am
U app/xev/NEWS
U app/xev/README
U app/xev/autogen.sh
U app/xev/configure.ac
U app/xev/xev.c
U app/xev/xev.man

Anyway, thanks a lot, btw, you have a great mouse

Cheers, Miro

In spite of wrong signatures I installed xorg-x11-server-6.8.2-7.2.102mdk.i586.rpm, but nothing great happened. I write "xev" in the shell, and it still writes "command not found". Has anybody an idea what I should do?

It looks like you are getting closer. I am using Suse 10 (boxed set) so my system works slightly differently. I don't know if Mandriva 2005 LE includes the GNU package 'findutils' and 'findutils-locate' mine are version findutils-4.2.23-5.x86_64.rpm. Anyway I find the locate utility to be very useful. You will have to run 'updatedb' as root to populate the locate database. One word of warning - if you have mounted partitions, USB drives or other media such as a DVD or CD in your drive, updatedb will include all the files therein or thereon.

my results for # locate xev return:

/usr/lib64/pkgconfig/xevie.pc
/usr/X11R6/bin/xev
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/extensions/xevieplaceholder.h
/usr/X11R6/man/man1/xev.1x.gz

If you tell me the make and model of your media keyboard I might be able to find specific instructions for getting your buttons to work.

Congratulations on your English unfortunately Slovak is not one of the languages that I learnt.

I am happy to help in any way that I can.

Cheers
Richard

solved

I appologize, I found X11R6-contrib on my install CDs. I thought it was unlikely to find there X11R6-contrib, when neither xev wasn't found. Thank you very much for your help and sorry for wasting your time

Miro
