Question cannot find -liberty ?

Dear all,

I have to install OpenMPi on a RE 6.8 server where I can't be root.
I get the error below :

Code:
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -liberty
That's the first time I get this message and wondering how you guys would fix this.
I've installed binutils but that did not help.
Compilation of OpenMPI releases 2.1.1 and 3.0.1 crashed the same way. The version 1.10.4
is already installed and works fine.

Thank you.

Hi,

If you're going to compile stuff, you'll also need the binutils development package, so run a:
Code:
sudo yum install binutils-devel

Not necessarily.
You can either compile binutils from source and install it locally, or you can give this a try.
Then use LD_LIBRARY_PATH so your sources will use the newly installed binutils.

The library's actually called libiberty, believe it or not! Someone invented the name because when you link in libraries with gcc, you need to omit the lib- prefix and add a -l option prefix instead. Some free software enthusiast thought that the result was pleasing to the eye.

But I'm wondering how you would actually install OpenMPi once you had built it, assuming that it built successfully, if you are not allowed to become root.

Hazel,

Just install it in your home folder using --prefix option.
I use to use the path $HOME/opt/openmpi/version/

Then set your .bashrc accordingly.
