Cannot add launcher

When I try to add a launcher it dies when I try to add an icon. The directory in which it checks is /usr/share/pixmaps. I did not get any useful error messages (just something that said that it crashed and I should try again).

I tried to run gnome-desktop-item-edit from the command line and got this:
Code:
# gnome-desktop-item-edit --create-new

(gnome-desktop-item-edit:8303): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.
gnome-desktop-item-edit: no file to edit
Am I doing something wrong?
