Cannot access CUPS in Mandriva 2009

I almost hate to publish this question:

The standard http://localhost:631 comes back with an error msg that the site cannot be found. Using Mandriva 2009. Looked at firewall and enabled CUPS, enabled port 631/tcp, and made certain that the CUPS software was installed. Browser works fine for anything else. Using a WPA controlled access and, as said, can get anywhere, anytime, but no CUPS.

This must be my error, but where? No trouble doing this in other distributions such as openSUSE 11.1, PCLinux, standard .deb and rpm. distros using same machine and hardware.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Thanks

You need to be root to access cups this way. Try through MCC.

Hi;

Thanks for the responses. Well, my problem was indeed operator error.
One of the nice things about Linux is its ability to install apps without rebooting...most of the time.

A simple reboot was all that was required. But only in Mandriva 2009. This same thing occurred on two machines with different hardware with the same Mandriva 2009. One of the machines was hardware from 10 years ago and the other, this one, which is about 3 years of age. SOoooooo.....

Be sure to install “task-printing” from the software manager, and then start CUPS from the services manager.
