Canna, Kon, Kinput2, Japanese configuration

Does anyone know how to use these utilities ?
My problem is that I can get them working from the terminal, by typing:

[guppy@localhost guppy]$ kinput2 -canna

Then launching kterm and pressing <SHIFT> <SPACE> to activate kanji conversion. Which works very nicely, I have to say.
Another way of doing it is getting a text-mode console and typing

[guppy@localhost guppy]$ kon

And then switching to another console, starting X and launching kterm.
BUT. When I try to get it working in say emacs or AbiWord, no matter what I try, I can't get Japanese. The man and README pages for these apps are really cryptic!

Does anyone know how this can be done easily? (If bad uncle Bill can do it ... )
