can you run an apache server alongside a postfix server

Can apache and postfix run on the same machine using the same ip address? I was wondering this because I would like to run a webserver on my ip address, and also a mail server on the same box. Is this even possible?

As long as they're bound to different ports. You would just have to make sure that you direct people to the right port. Like 64.155.33.25:81. and 64.155.33.25:100 , just an example.

Different services use different default ports like:

http = port 80
smtp = port 25
pop = 110
ftp = 21
ssh = 22
telnet = 23

So yes, its possible to have a server running more than one service on the same IP, as millions most likely are doing all across the world..

That's a million and 1, count me in

It's really no problem. You won't even really notice, a simple "standard" install of both applications should work nearly out of the box, and side by side. The only time you'd ever run into problems with them is if you re-routed the ports for some odd reason, in which case you'd know what you were doing anyway.

Cool

Unix/linux are multitasking OS since their birth time. Just type in prompt:

ps -ax | less

Then u will see the many processes running on ur system side by side ..
