Can you play rented dvds in mythtv?
Can you play rented dvds in mythdvd/tv? From Block buster? I saw that there was some problems with encoded dvds. Are rented dvds encoded?

Most are. I think libdvdcss will unencrypt them... but, in the US it is illegal to bypass encryption on copyrighted works like rented dvd's from Blockbuster.

Yep what a weird piece of legislation. It should be totally illegal to bypass for the purpose of duplication and resale, but surely a user should have the freedom to use the hardware of their choice to play the purchased medium.

I agree.
This is particularly weird as far as I'm concerned because I had DVD Player software that came with my LG DVD Burner I recently purchased. This libdvdcss is a particularly miserable piece of software to get working ... lots of dependencies and such... I finally gave up trying.
