Can you help me upgrade KOrganizer?

I have KDE 3.1.3 and KOrganizer 3.1.1 that came with my Mandrake 9.2 install. I use this system at work.

My boss wants all of the staff to use Outlook (she means, our computers) to manage our calendars, as opposed to paper day-planners.

I'm having problems with my KOrganizer calendar and to-do list in that there are some features I need that it doesn't have (e.g. display the "location" field in the to-do list view) but I read on KDE's web site that some features were in the "KOrganizer to-do fix list" and have since been removed.

I assume to get some more functionality, all i have to do is upgrade the program.
I would like to do this without having to re-install my whole OS.

How to do this?

Thanks for any advice.

Have you set up URPMI ? If not, that is where to start. Here is a link to set up Easy URPMI.

http://www.urpmi-addmedia.org/index2.php

Follow the instructions on the site. Once done, use MDK update to install the updated packages you need. This is the most fool proof method of updating any package with Mandrake AKA Mandriva. It will look after any dependencies as well.

Post back if you need further guidance.

Hi Cliff, thanks for your reply.

I don't recall ever having heard of urpmi. Is it similar to apt-get for Debian?
Can I use it to update any application I have?

I typed this in: "rpm -qa | grep urpmi" and got this:
"gurpmi-4.4-37mdk
urpmi-4.4-37mdk"

I found a utility called "Mandrake Update" / RPMdrake in my K menu. I used it to update my Korganizer. But after the update when i launched Korganizer, it still says I have version 3.1.1. How do I upgrade the version to the latest version? I dont want just bug fixes/ security patches, but I want the newer features.

Thanks for your assistance.

I have never used Debain, but as I understand it, URPMI should be similar to get-apt. You can install a new package, upgrade, security updates, and get access to applications Mandrake does not directly make available.

You need to add a link for each respiratory you want to be able to work with. If you go to MCC --> Software Management --> Media manager, you will see a list of the current media you are set up to install from. If you have never changed this, you will see CD1 CD2 and CD3 listed as medium. Have a look at the site I gave you, and read through the instructions. You can add online media to replace the CD's. I have five on my system. You can have more. I have jpackage, main, contrib, updates and plf-free. You select a server for each one.

If you want to find an update for an installed app, select the Updates icon in MCC. Type the partial name of the package, if it is available, it will be listed. There is a check box, mark it, it will tell you about any dependencies, click the Install button. Your update will get installed. Same process for security updates and any others.

You need the urpmi package installed on your system. Then you update the medium from the link I gave you.

The trick I use is to go to "Remove packages'" and tell it to remove the package I have in question. If it is installed, it will get listed. You can quit it you don't want to remove it, or if you want to reinstall, remove, and then re-install. I just tried this on gurpmi, and found it is installed on my 10.1 system. I can never remember the command line stuff to type.

Set up URPMI first. Once that is done, go to updates, type korganizer and press search. If a new package is available, it will be listed. Check the box and click on install. The servers and URPMI do the rest. I can't tell you without looking if a newer package for Korganizer is available. The other option is to find the source and compile it. That is more difficult though. Some people will only do it that way in order to have the very latest available updates.

Hope this helps.

Hi Cliff,

Thanks again for helping me.

I forgot to say that I did do the website thing you said. My RPMDrake says that it had some bug fixes for korganizer, some bug that affected "Versions 3.1.1 through 3.1.4" and since I have 3.1.1 I know that I don't have the latest version.

On the website, I didn't know which button to click. So I clicked on "Source updates" under "1) Core Distribution". Is that the correct one?

As a last resort, I could use rpmdrake to uninstall and reinstall Korganizer -- but I'm afraid to lose my current calendar events.

Would it be more advisable to try and find a later version of the KOrganizer RPM? I've had bad luck in the past with that, with errors that my (kernel, glibc, whatever) is not the correct version it needs (i.e. too outdated).

Is there any way to do this without upgrading/reinstalling KDE or the OS?

Nope, you will need to upgrade some KDE package to fulfill those dependencies. Can't you use urpmi to update?

Avatar,

I had a look into updating KOrganizer. It appears you have to updae KDE, which is no small task. It may mean you have to update gcc also, I didn't dig into to that too far.

At this point I would consider several options.

1. This I think is the simplest. Have a look at Ximian Evolution, it is a E-mail client and calandering program. If that will work for you, you could avoid all the upgrading. Just install it and have a look.

2. Upgrade KDE. I think this is the most difficult path to take.

3. Upgrade your system to say 10.1, or what ever you choose. If you have the disk space, you could do this by setting up dual boot, until you work out any install issues. This would give you a newer version of KDE and KOrganizer.

I'm going to boot to 10.1 and I'll post the KDE version, and KOrganizer version.

On Mandrake 10.1 Official, KDE shows version 3.2. Korganizer shows version 3.3. I did a search for an update to kedpim, but did not find one. I'm not sure if this is a high enough version of Korganizer or not. If not, there is a newer version than 10.1 Official of Mandriva out. You may want to check it out.

Thanks Cliff for all your helpful information. I will check into Ximian; it might just be easier to uninstall Korganizer.

thanks again
