probably google can help you: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install...rtual-machine/
I suggest you to use CentOS or another distro, I don't think the best choice is to start with RedHat.

If you have Red Hat, then I would say make use of the support contract. Otherwise I would second the suggestion to use another distro. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are two that are the easiest to get started with and, last time I checked, have more packages available.

About the virtual machine, I'd really recommend avoiding VMware. You can find many reasons to do so with a quick search. An alternative for now is VirtualBox.

However, running in a virtual machine is going to be more difficult and of less use than running on bare metal. I'd recommend that whichever distro you try that you use GNU/Linux as the host and run your legacy operating system as the guest. That will be easier and it will give you more direct experience with GNU/Linux. Additionaly since the legacy system is messy and crashy you can put that in a virtual machine and use the snapshot capability to roll back to a last-known-good state when (not if) the legacy system runs into fatal problems.

you did buy $$$ the required support contract
-- this allows you to install software like SECURITY fixes and other programs

without the required contract , you basically DO NOT install anything on it

so
buy the support contract !!!!

or

install CentOS 7.4 or ScientificLinux 7.4

both are FREE rebuilds of redhat

You should be able to download the media in a few formats. What do the choices say?
