Can sendmail be throttled down?
I'm new to Linux administration in a company setting, but have been using it at home on and off for > 10 years. I recently convinced my boss to use it for file and email serving.
Today, a user was sending an email with a large attachment that slowed the network down to a crawl. I could have terminated the offending email, but it was business related and a customer on the other end was desparately seeking susan (sorry, couldn't help myself :D). Is it possible to throttle traffic on port 25 (or any port for that matter) after a set threshold is exceeded consistently for a period of time? Another solution would be to queue email for later delivery if an attachment exceeds a set threshold; is this something that can be done on sendmail? Thanks for sharing your thoughts. |
postfix and sendmail
can someone explain to me what she is asking ? |
Hi,
I don't know if you can configure sendmail to queue large mails until night. As for throttling: You probably want to look into traffic shaping. I've got no experience with that either, but relevant howto's should be here and here Ewt3y: It is very difficult to explain what the original question is if you don't tell which parts you don't understand. Please use a little bit more text when posting, and you'll probably get more useful replies. Groetjes, Kees-Jan |
i dont understand these terms : offending email. seeking susan ,
can u explain ? |
Sure,
The original poster has problems with his e-mail system. Especially large ones are causing problems. He refers to an e-mail causing problems as an "offending e-mail" (offence = break the rules) "Desperately seeking susan" refers to a movie from 1985, where two people are trying to contact each other by placing advertisements in a newspaper. I'd guess that the customer was very eager to get into contact. Groetjes, Kees-Jan |
