cant recieve emails on virtual domain with Squirrelmail

I searched the threads for a while, and couldn't find the responce that i need. I apologize fi this is a double post.

I have successfully installed squirrelmail, and am able to send out E-mail with no problems. Receiving E-mails just isn't happening. This is all new to me, so I am pretty much dead in the water.

Based on looking at some logs and so forth, the E-mail is making it to my server (Apache), but the server does not know what to do with it. I just need to get my server to route the E-mails where they need to go.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think I understand you, apache is not going to handle the actual mail. Do you have sendmail or any other MTA running? And do you have IMAP running for SquirrelMail to be able to retrieve the mail? Also if you can give us more on your actual setup, like I assume your using a domain and have the proper MX records on the DNS setup, etc?

I played around with squirrlemail for awhile until we dcecided to go another route and i never got that far with it so i can't help you. However - i don't see how Apache fits into the equation either as i was under the assumption i was going to have to use sendmail for the actual transporting and delivering of the e-mail. But - in response to trickykid what does IMAP have to do with the retrieving of messages?

SquirrelMail uses the IMAP protocol for web-based email to retrieve the email, that's where IMAP comes into the equation.

I am using Apache to run the webserver, and Squirrelmail to handle all E-mail activities. I do have IMAP installed and running. I guess all I need to know how to do is add a user to IMAP.

Also, I am not so sure I have the MX records setup. I own 2 domains, and use zonedit.com to route the domain names to my web server. From what I read, putting brettpower.com in the MX record field was correct. However, it does not seem to work entirely.

The mail is making it to my linux box. The mail always goes to Root user's email box. Below is the contents of one of the messages;

"The original message was received at Mon, 8 Mar 2004 12:08:35 -0500
from localhost
with id i28H8ZUf006127

I can build computers, design web pages, and do just about everything else with computers, but setting up an E-mail server has me tickled. Sorta weird being on the other end of the stick and begging for help.

Okay so apache is running and IMAP... what about your actual MTA like sendmail or postfix, etc? You actually need a MTA running and configured properly to recieve mail to your domain and server.

IMAP is just the service running so you can retrieve your mail from the server, just about any user you create will be able to accept mail by default on your server.

MTA is the daemon that handles the delivery of mail, think of it as your mailman and post office delivering the mail to your house at the correct street address. If you have your MX records setup with zoneedit.com well then you just haven't configured your server properly yet.
