Can not get a command line program to run

Hi there. I came to the forum after trying to solve my problem searching the web to no avail. This is the issue: I downloaded the source for a program called gnuplot (which is a command line program.) I managed to compile with some errors and was able to run the help command of the program but other than that the program was not really working. I discovered too late that the program is available for Fedora which is my current distribution. After issuing a make uninstall inside the source code folder, the program does not run at all. On the other hand When I install from the Fedora repositories, I get a success message "Installed: gnuplot-5... Complete!" But when I try to run the program I get "bash: /usr/local/bin/gnuplot: No such a file or directory. I have issued so many commands I am afraid I created a big mess!

Your help will be much appreciated!

When you downloaded the source and built it, it was installed under /usr/local/ which is reserved for your local builds. When you downloaded the Fedora version, it installed the program under /usr, most likely /usr/bin/gnuplot, which is where the official system components are placed. You can go ahead and mess up /usr/local all you want. Have fun experimenting.

Welcome to LQ, noriegafam

On my CentOS server, gnuplot was installed to /bin/gnuplot, and is linked from /usr/local/bin/gnuplot

What does
Code:
which gnuplot
return?
That's the quick way to find out where it was installed, as long as the location is in your PATH.

Thank you guys. Smallpond was right on the money. I now can see the help options from gnuplot. I've been using Linux for a decade and an half and still feel like a newbie.
Now I just have to figure out how use the little program. :-)
