Can no longer launch anything from the tray

I have a dual boot PC with Winndows7 and LinuxMint 17.2. I've had this configuration for a year or more and have switched between both OS w/o a problem. Today I switched from Windows 7 to Linux Mint and it appears the desktop looks OK but I can't launch anything from the tray. Suggestions? Thank you

touch said /file and reboot to LinuxMint to complete the check and repair.
fsck on reboot, easy-peasy, mac-n-cheesy.

Have a Great Day.

You can try getting to a Virtual Console (tty*) by pressing ALT+CTRL+F1, if that doesn't work, press F2 instead of F1.

Do NOT press the + symbol, as this is not a part of the keyboard combination.
