Can I run Unix software on Linux?
I download Internet Explorer 5 for Solaris, and would like to know if there is anyway I can install it on Linux. I also have the HP-UX version.
Thanks, Noah |
No, there is no way to run IE in linux, save for using WINE
|
I'm not exactly sure, what system architecture are the binaries compiled for (I assume they're binaries since they are from MS)? Solaris machines do not use IA-32 processors (whereas most PC's do) and neither does HP-UX (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). Also, why use IE, Mozilla or Netscape is just as good a web browser and probably came with your distro. Please note that any plug-ins you might want to use probably wouldn't work in Linux anyway. In theory, UNIX code can be compiled in Linux, but I have never tried and therefore could be wrong.

I know it is a no good browser, but I just want too do it. Yeah, they are binaries.

man, I love IE.
if there was ANY program I'd like to see run natively in linux, its IE. I mean, I'm sorry, It's just the best.... ...in my opinion. |
I did want to do it through Wine a while back, but only for kicks. I really don't give a crap because I have Firefox and have kicked Wine out of my life since I never used Photoshop since I had the GIMP anyway.

I prefer the Konqueror web browser over IE.

wget is better. lol
|
Lynx is better.

Telnet to port 80. Not a MS telnet client though they still let popups through. Is better.

Binaries will never work, sorry chum. Get the source (and get the source to Window's while your at it) and you might have a chance.
