Can I run MIDI with only an on-board sound card in Linux?

So, what I want to know is.. is it possible (and with what programs/modules[?]) to run MIDI music for me, given that I only have an on-board sound card? (Gigabyte nForce2 GA-7N400-L motherboard, AC'97 sound thing, that sort of stuff *mumble*)

I know I can run (admittedly crappy) software MIDI on Windows, and I need to know how I can have (at least) that level of MIDI on Linux. It'd be nice. :p

Try timidity.

Get timidity and the sound fonts. Install all that stuff (and you will need a timidity.cfg file, but I think that comes with the sound fonts). Then if you run timidity as:
timidity -iA
it should use alsa as output.

I was wondering how to get by the whole "timidity.cfg" thing.. comes with soundfonts, thanks. I think there are some readily available on the Portage tree. :D So this could be decently easy. I thinks.
