Unhappy can i download and play xmms when iam not root


Iam A first year student of an IT-professional coleege in india


I login as user in our fedora 2.6.5.-1.358 not as root.I cannot access as root

Now can i Download and play XMMS from The net when iam not the root.

There is already an xmms player but there is no Audio Input plugin called

MPG Layer 1/2/3/ player 1.2.8 which i found out that it is required to play mp3 songs


No how should i play the downloaded xmms

When there is already an xmms player downloaded and running but not playing mp3 songs.

Uhh....well, I don't really know for sure but...

I think there might be a way to install XMMS into you home directory. Try looking around for "Install Path" or something like that in the docs.
BTW, if you were to do that the directory you would use would be something like /home/user_name/bin

After that you'd have to tell XMMS to use a different plugins directory than normal, eg, the one in your /home.

NOTE: This is only my guess. I don't know how XMMS really works put it's pretty customizable and it might have a way to do these things, and it might not.

Yes u can. Its fairly straightforward.
Download xmms source, install in home directory by doing
./configure --prefix=/home/xyz
make
make install

Roughly- check the README/INSTALL files for the exact procedure.
