Question Can I BOOT windows xp from vmware workstation on fc4

Hello,

I have a dual boot WinXP/FC4 system. I mainly use FC4/KDevelop but there are some win progrs that I would like to run but I cannot make them run under wine.

I have installed VMWare Workstation for Linux 5. I know I can install a fresh WinXP on a VirtualMachine. But I have already WinXP installed in a NTFS partition (/dev/hda1). So I wonder if someone knows how to boot my existing WinXP partition from inside VMWare without reinstalling them?

When I tried to do that (boot existing XP partition from VMWare as root), grub issued an error 17:

"GRUB loading, please wait....
Error 17"

and nothing more. What is this? Do I have to uninstall grub in order to boot XP from their partition?

Thanks in advance.

oxy

If GRUB is installed to the MBR, then I can't imagine why it's trying to load grub, if you pointed it to the right partition.

Then...how can I see if GRUB is installed on MBR?

This is my menu.lst

I re-installed grub issuing grub-install /dev/hda.

How can I see if it is installed on MBR?

# grub.conf generated by anaconda

I can add I have exactly the same problem. Just to precise, it's not the normal Grub screen you have but just a black screen with in the top left the word Grub. you get the same from windows trying to run linux when you use physical disk and not virtual disk. I can not understand why becaus obiouvsly, you precise the partition you want to take in consideration so MBR shoud be skipped.
