I'm Linux newbie who just started using dedicated server.
In VPS, backup, restore, and OS installation was just one-click thanks to SolusVM.
However, it seems like everything takes money in dedicated server.

Here is my brief server configuration :
SSD 16G (System) & HDD 1TB (backup & personal data)

Now, I want to install my OS in SSD and back up file system into HDD.
It seems like "dd if=/dev/hda of=/data/disk1.img" will make my backup easy.
However, I think it should be a bad idea to overwrite system disk directly with commands like "dd if=/data/disk1.img of=/dev/hda" while Linux is working on it.
The guideline I found on web tells me to boot as CD and overwrite system disk with dd.

However, I don't want to spend extra money to buy KVM.

Is there any method I can backup & restore from remote with SSH & remote reboot feature?

If I understand your situation correctly, you want to do a remote boot from a CD via SSH and then do an install onto your SSD. I don't know how to do that, and I'm not sure if it's possible, but then I claim no expertise in that area. If I had to do it, I'd do it in a very convoluted manner:
1. backup the SSD to the HDD as described above
2. install the OS to the HDD
3. reconfigure the system to boot from the HDD
4. reboot the system (from the HDD)
5. install the system on the SSD
6. reconfigure the system to boot from the SSD
7. reboot the system (from the SSD)
Hopefully, someone more knowldgeable can provide a more effective and efficient workflow.
