Lightbulb can gcc for fedora be used on Red Hat?

Hi all,
I have a Red Hat version 9 system, with gcc 3.2.2. Just out of curiosity, I want to know if i can install the gcc version 4.3.1.1(meant for Fedora - says so on the rpm site) on my Red hat without screwing it up?

Thanks in advance

If you want to install a newer version of gcc, you 'll have to install its dependencies as well. There're many changes between version 3 and 4 of gcc I think. Anyway, RH 9 is much older than fedora. You could try that adventure. Finding dependencies is a time-consumed job, but you'll feel great when you've finished. (in case you can finish it )

FC 9 GCC won't work on RH9. If you want an upgraded GCC, you'll most likely need to build your own for RH 9 and then also build or find all the packages that depend on GCC to use the new GCC. You might as well rewrite the whole OS while your at it cause that would be a very painstakingly process. I'd have to say, if you want to upgrade GCC on RH9, it's much easier to just upgrade your OS instead at this point.

I guess no. But why are you using RH9, anyway? It is a 5-year-old distro which has no support anymore.
