Can anyone point me to a good All in one IM program?
I'm using imici at the moment, it's ok, but doesn't have the same functionality as the original services such as AIM/MSN/YAHOO/ICQ/IRC. I was thinking like in the league as Trillian, but trill has no linux. Been lookin around, there were some others for linux, but so far imici connects to all the services just fine, only being limited to functions. Also if not all in one IMs, can any one point me to seperate IM apps that have most of the functionality to their counterparts of Windows version? I've tried the actual release of AIM, but it suxors. Some of the IM apps on Windows have functions such as sound, voice, and sometimes Video Conferencing. Thats general in the support I'm looking for. Thanx in advance.
Although I think you may be hard pressed to find one that does VideoConferencing all that well. I am not too sure if GAIM does it either. But I do think it supports sound and conferencing. Don't forget to "load" the modules for any other IM's you are looking to use.
This has been the best one I have found. Actually I stopped looking for a better one once I found it because it does everything I want. If you or anyone has come across a better one that does a good job at supporting VC or something, let me know.
GAIM is very good. However, when someone attempts to send me an attachment, for some reason I don't receive it. Also, I'm not sure about this but from my experience, sending anything other than english will result in the other side seeing question marks. For video conferencing, you might want to check out Gnomemeeting (http://www.gnomemeeting.org)

GAIM is very good but the MSN plugin does not yet support sending or receiving files (it says this in the readme though im not sure about ICQ or the others).
GAIM is the only prog that i know of which supports most of the chatting protocols. It even does IRC and can do this out of the same window (so MSN, ICQ, Yahoo and IRC can have just one window with different tabs going).
For general ICQ stuff then Licq is very stable but it looks damn ugly by default and doesn't support anything other than the stock ICQ (no other protocols for example).
A look on sourceforge.net will yield numerous chatting progs but GAIM seems to come on top (though a jabber client, such as gabber looks promising. It can handle most protocols but i have never got it to work for me).
I am extremely new to linux, got it going on my laptop for work and used it for about an hour, but I found GAIM great, I got the recommendation from another member on the site, adn I had it up and running about 2 minutes, couldnt be any easier, while if it put an icon on the desktop it would be
If it didn't keep seg faulting on me, I'd suggest Everybuddy... but it does, so I won't. Having said that, when it is running, it does a very nice job, and has a very clear display.

Surely that's a good thing with all these exploits going around?
OK I've just seen the date on these ancient posts.
Thanks arsham for digging up every IM thread back to 2002 or so. I hope you feel good about knocking peoples posts down to the second page when they need help.
Gaim is good. But when you've used trillian like me nothing seems to match. If your using KDE then they have there own IM(Kopete) that allows all protocalls and I actually liked it when I used it. Besides that I've heard of people porting trillian over you might want to give that a try. Not sure what emulator that used, but this is the place to ask :-)
