Can anyone crack this mystery? (Re Mod_Throttle)

Hi all.

Firstly, mod throttle is awesome for killing off those relentless attacks from web harvesters, site rippers, and just about all other scum that wants to thrash the server at gazillions of hits per second, and especially with refferer/ agent blocking slowly becoming useless.

The problem as always with mod_throttle, is a real lack of meaningful documentation, an FAQ, or even a forum of some sort. As a result, most people just give up on it, and as I’ve seen in 2-days of Google searching. The truth is, it’s a killer module and the solution to a lot of problems. Too bad Snert (author) won’t give his docs a little more TLC.

PROBLEM:

Everything is working, except that dam mod_throttle and mod_status page thing. 404.. 404.. 404, and nothing but 404 errors, no matter how you configure it in the httpd.conf file, or in a virtual container. I can’t access mod_throttles user interface!! Again, hundreds of other people are complaining about the same thing, but I have yet to see a resolve.

THIS IS FUNNY!

I CAN access the mod_throttle pages with Netscape Version 3.04. Can you believe that? Try accessing that same page with MSIE, Firefox, or new Netscape, and nothing but 404 page not found errors. How the hell is this even possible? Anyway… This is my last hope at finding a resolve to this issue. I’m really hoping someone here has had some experience with mod_throttle’s status pages. How can I access mod_status through a newer browser like MS or Firefox? Any help is most welcome!

Thanks as always,

Dave H

Well, if something that odd is connecting...

Telnet localhost 80
GET pathto/modthrottle/index.html HTTP/1.0
enter enter

Just curious anyway.

It might be mangling the request for http/1.1 stuff...

Hey..

After much mucking about, I found the problem, and possibly one of the few who have according to numerous times I’ve seen this posted around the web. It seems that the initial instructions to check the throttle interface is to call http://mysite.com/throttle-status. In many cases, this will return a 404 error with common browsers, unless you’re crazy enough to have an old copy of Netscape 3.0 kicking around (like me) and happen to try it that way. Well.. For anyone else that stumbles into this posting with the same problem, all you need to do is call it as:
PHP Code:
http://mysite.com/throttle-status?content-type=text/html&refresh=60&view=client-ip
Now it will work in MSIE, Firefox, New Netscape, etc. I’m assuming it must have something to do with calling this type=text/html thing in the browser. Other than a significant learning curve, mod_throttle is awesome. It’s doing an excellent job of killing off the leaches, keeping resources to a minimum, and keeping all that crap out of the server logs. I had to use the PHP thing to post that url, otherwise VB insists on enclosing it in url tags, which makes mess of it.

When I have a chance, I’ll Telnet to it, as out of curiosity, I’d like to see what it’s doing.

Thanks Cylix,

Dave H
