Can't Print Under Wine . . .

Hi folks

I'm using Fedora 17 with Xfce desktop. I have installed Wine 1.5.8 and Cups 1.5.4.

I have a few Windoze programs that i have to run for work (school teacher).

One of them reported that it couldn't print, because no default printer had been set up. Couldn't figure out why, but after a few days it found it.

Another, program did the same today. I've rebooted several times, it still says there's no default printer.

All Linux printing is working fine; Cups sees them (4 if you count cups-pdf) and I can use them.

Wine Notepad works fine as well; although when I print, there's only a blank printer selection. The drop down however has all four printers -- maybe the first entry is "blank"?

I've google around a bit, but can't decipher which file to look at. A lot of Wine documentation is rather old.

Most folks say, "If Cups works, Wine should work." But it isn't.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ken

There are 4 printers -- one (HPLJ P2055dn) was set through software provided from the HP website. Two were setup through Cups (Toshiba copier, Brother wireless) and one through the Xfce Printer Administration widget (Canon MXP320). Again, all printers work fine through Linux -- no questions asked. I doubt Cups is the issue.

Some Wine software prints as well. One program complained about "no default printer setup," but later found it, and now it works also.

This seems to be a Wine issue . . .

and not using the software in the fedora 17 repos ?
that might be an issue for fedora 17 , seeing as it is SO NEW that not many big company's yet fully support it

i would use what is installed BY fedora 17 for use with fedora 17

How are these 4 different printers connected wi-fi ? usb ?, the OLD parallel port ?
or are they Network printers

i would try using the HP in a USB and set that up using the localhost link
http://localhost:631

have just one printer plugged in and see if that helps

Also not all MS Windows software will work 100% in wine
almost all have problems .

k-12 ?
i would dual boot
or
if you have the ram install a VM ( or use KVM ) and run win7 in a virtual environment
unless this is OLD windows software for XP then run XP sp3 in a vm .

The HP printer setup simply installed monitoring software in the information area. CUPS is still the printer subsystem for the HP printer. The HP printer installation was a script file that actually used existing repos to install the printer.

Again -- all printers work well in Linux. I can print test pages and documents to ANY of them using localhost:631 or the software. I can do likewise with most programs running under Wine. It's only a couple of programs, but they exhibit the same characteristic: neither of them seem to be aware of ANY printers existing.

And -- as to running windows programs -- I certainly do not want the hassle of dual booting, just so I can run an occasional windows app. Ditto for VM ware. If the program will run under Wine, and does what it needs to do, then Wine is the simplest solution. On that note: both these programs have worked flawlessly under Wine in the past -- this is something new.

I posted my question to see if anyone knew something helpful . . . so far, no luck.

so they WERE working in fedora 17 but stopped ?
or
they were working in an older version of fedora but not now in fedora 17

if the second then it might have something to do with the network changes in 17
( guessing that these 4 printers are a network set up )

Also guessing here
these two Windows programs had an "installer" ( setup.exe) that was user to install them into wine
if so
is there a ( wine version) system registry entry for them
and if so is there an "HKEY_ " for a printer
Code:
wine regedit

Not sure -- I've only recently came back to fedora after a stint with Ubuntu (I didn't like Gnome 3 -- still don't). Things worked under Fedora 13 - 15, and Ubuntu Natty. Again: there were no problems with regular Linux printing or Wine printing under any of these distros. And yes, these were the exact same Windoze programs installed under wine.

True. These programs did have setup.exe files. I've never really understood all the ins and outs of the Windoze registry, so I usually only poke around when given instructions.

Now: last night, there was a F17 update. The Wine packages were all updated. You guessed it! All Windoze programs are now recognizing the four installed printers and printing to them . . .

Can't really marked this "SOLVED," but it is fixed . . .

Thanks
