"Can't open display" error


Hello. I installed XFree86 4.4.0 on Slackware Linux 9.1 and now when I get error:

"Can't open display"

How I can repair it or where I can read about $DISPLAY variable? Thanks a lot.

Try running XF86Config.

that's xf86config
the uppercase version is the config file.

I tried. But there's no $DISPLAY environment variable. I don't know how to set this variable and what I need to write as its value.

export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0

see if that works. I suspect it has more to do with choosing the wrong drivers though...are there any error messages starting (EE) when you type startx ?

Nothing...

P.S. When I launch kde with startkde it writes Can't Open Display
But when with startx he display x-cursor on gray screen and computer is not respond.
