Hi,

I installed Redhat 9 a few weeks ago and after playing around with some apps and drivers, etc. I realized I hadn't installed everything I wanted (like kernel source, X source, and things like that.

I'm using Gnome and they have a nice little add remove programs (like windoze) which runs the redhat installer gui. I can also do this from Redhat CD 1 with the same effect.

I try to install these packages and it runs through checking dependencies and says I have to have xxxxx to continue with the install. Things like krb5-devel or openssl-lib, the list varies depending on what I have told it to install. Bottom line though, I actually DO have those packages. I downloaded them from rpmfind and tried to install them manually with the rpm command and it just told me that they were already installed (same version too).

How can I install new packages from the CD then? should i be using something else to do the installs?

Just cd into the directory containing the RPMs on the CD, and run "rpm -Uvh packagename.rpm", if it complains about dependencies that you have already met, then you might want to try out "rpm -Uvh --nodeps", but you might have probs down the road, if the dependent packages are installed in different locations than is expected. Basically, the simplest way to resolve depends issues is to make sure you actually get packages for your specific distribution and version. Also, you might want to check out Red Carpet 2 by Ximian. It's sweet :-)

Thanks a lot. I was trying the RPM route but I had a bunch of options I wanted to install, so then I tried red carpet which, you are right. Very sweet. I'm all up to date and all the packages I wanted are on my system. Hopefully I'll learn some more and be able to use them :-)

How did you install Red Carpet for Red Hat? I just tried using RH9 and ran across two issues(?):

1) activation/sign up - i just bypassed

2) at the end it says 'the installer was unable to find any ximian products for your operating system. report the error to xxxx. installer-ng 1.2.6 on red hat linux 9'

BTW, I have the exact same problem you had about adding new programs but failing due to supposedly missing dependencies (which are actually installed).

that red carpet is a great program. i was trying to install 'GNOME development software' through add/remove applications and it said that 3 packages were not found which i knew i had. red carpet to the rescue.

Sounds like you may be trying to install the entire Ximian Desktop. Ximian Desktop is only available for a finite amount of supported desktops (since Novell owns both Ximian and SuSE, it's not surprising that SuSE is one of the few that's supported ;-)).

Try going here instead --> http://www-files.ximian.com/redcarpet2/redhat-9-i386/
Download those packages and then:
"Use the su command to become root.


Use your distribution's default software installation tools to install as in the example below (please note that not all supported distributions will contain a Red Carpet GUI client package):

rpm -Uvh <red carpet rpm> <rcd rpm> <rug rpm>"

Your steps worked great. I guess I was trying to install the wrong package before. Thank you but the joy doesn't last long.

After I installed it, I selected to perform many updates. It failed at some point stating it was missing some dependencies. So, I exited and did some other stuff and went back to launch red-carpet (as root) only to discover I can't re-launch it now. I always get the following error:
"Error: Couldn't import gtk."

I tried as normal & root and also rebooted.

Any suggestions ?
