I just reinstalled Fedora Core 8 with firefox-2.0.0.13 and thunderbird-2.0.0.12. Firefox works fine, but I can't get thunderbird profilemanager to run. I use thunderbird for two users, and need the profilemanager to set up two profiles.

If I enter "thunderbird -ProfileManager", like the help menu says, nothing happens. I tried adding the line "/usr/lib/thunderbird-2.0.0.12" to the /etc/ld.so.conf file, but nothing changed.

Any suggestions on why the profile manager won't run?

This may not be helpful, but, for what it's worth:

1) I confirmed that the "Profile Manager" is not accessible on Fedora using TB 2.0.0.12

2) If the ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini file is edited by hand to include any profile other than the default profile, thunderbird will not execute unless it's started from a terminal with the -P default option. (That may be because I didn't create any entries for the "by hand" profile in about:config, although I don't see any "profile" entries in it. Note: The Thubderbird about:config was not easily edited until I installed the MR Tech "Local Install" extension.)

3) I wasn't aware of the problem you've had because I just created separate accounts for my wife and me inside the default profile. Of course, doing it that way means that each user's mail is visible to every other user, but it does work.

It's interesting that you also found that thunderbird profile manager didn't work on Fedora; it did until yesterday, when I blew my system up and had to reinstall. Today I also tried thunderbird 2.0.0.6, but it didn't work either. And I can't use multiple accounts in a single profile because we have different address books. So the workaround, with your suggestion, was to manually edit the profiles.ini file in the .thunderbird file and add Profile1 and Profile2 with the appropriate paths. I then put two quicklaunch icons in the panel, one for thunderbird -P profile1, and the other for thunderbird -P profile2, and gave them distinguishable names. So now we can each start our own email with the profile manager.

O.K., I'm glad it worked for you. As I said, I couldn't get individual profiles to work editing profile.ini by hand, but I didn't try very hard.

As to your "multiple address books" remark, TB supports multiple address books in a single profile, and, IIRC, you can specify the default address book on a per account basis. Just import the address books with different names.

I found why nothing works.

I used command thunderbird -P instead thunderbird -p or whatever. The command is case sensitive! Trivial question for Linux users but i couldnt think about this but just now I tested and it works!

Profile manager for TB will open normally.

I hope this help everybody if somebody didnt find a solution still.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think it's common knowledge that many Linux commands are case sensitive. In this case, I had tried all possible permutations of the command line to open the profile manager; nothing worked, including "thunderbird -P" and "thunderbird -p". In all cases, the command line returned nothing and the profile manager didn't open. Maybe you're using a different version of Linux; I'm running Fedora 8, updated at the beginning of every month.
