This is done by Microsoft, if your not using their software, you won't be able to connect. However, that should change soon when the developers know a way around it and or I think someone mentioned that the latest amsn is capable of connecting.

Yes, whenever Microsoft updates the protocols it causes problems for third-party clients until they're able to reverse-engineer them and incorporate them into their own products.
the latest kopete or kmess (can't remember which)....i supposed to be on par with the new protocols....but i'm having difficulty installin it...anyway das another thread...
you must have nss and nspr tar.gz, decompress and put them in /usr/local
them you decompress gaim 0.71, enter in this directory and write this command: ./configure --with-nss-includes=/usr/local/nss --with-nss-libs=/usr/local/nss --with-nspr-includes=//usr/local/nspr --with-nspr-libs=/usr/local/nspr
