Can't build from sources - gcc problem

I have a new installation of mdk10 Official and when running ./configure on supertux I get this error:

checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

I have gcc installed and all development libraries from the install cds. I can use KDevelop and compile little hello worlds in c from the command line...I had the same problem building other software (gtk-gnutella). Any ideas? TIA

There may be some clues as to the cause of the problem in the config.log file that is generated when running ./configure. Maybe check that out?
