Hi
Have a 2 SSD drive setup. One is dedicated to Windows. The other to Ubuntu.
The only change I have made in my UEFI-BIOS is to disable fast boot.

I switch between drives via UEFI-BIOs on boot.

I was able to successfully boot into a fresh Ubunto install several times without issue.
Now for some reason my UEFI doesn't seem to recognize my Ubuntu SSD as bootable.

If you look at the Boot Priority in the attached pic the top most SSD, Samsung EVO 850 1TB has my Ubuntu install.
Shouldn't the actual drive name be preceded by [UEFI] in this menu?

Could this have something to do with either Secure Boot (enabled) or CSM(Compatibility Support Module or Legacy BIOS) enabled? If so curious why I had no issues for several reboots.

Of course, any suggestions or feedback welcome. 3rd install in the past couple months, I want to get it right this time!

How do I check if GRUB was accidentally installed on my Windows Boot partition?
And if it was, how do I remove it?

Also, one other possible error I made from the partitioning guide, although I used gParted for my partitioning,

in the guide I followed it suggested it was enough that you select the drive, not the actual partition. ie /sda NOT /sda1

So maybe my partitioning isn't 100%?


Also, this is the result of running boot info script. sda is of course my Linux drive and sda1 is my ESP. Shouldn't I see boot files listed there? And to be quite honest, have NO idea what sdb is...

As you have discovered dual-booting can be a real PITA.

Unless somebody else can come up with a better idea, I think you need to BACKUP every piece of data from both drives and create a bootable W10 recovery USB drive, just in case things go pear-shaped.

Hopefully your W10 SSD will boot on its own with the Linux SSD disconnected, but there are no guarantees.

If the W10 SSD does boot, then there is some hope.

NB You really need to pause for a while before diving in and making the situation even worse than it is now!

Thoroughly digest the information in the tutorial and preferably have another computer handy so that you can refer to the tutorial whilst you work on the two SSDs etc.

Follow the tutorial and the separate recommended partitioning guide.

Followed his instructions EXACTLY except for one caveat. On my setup (Asus X99 AII mobo and Samsung 850 M.2 SSD,) I cannot disable CSM without at least bricking my UEFI-BIOS or worse, preventing boot into Windows, get only black screen. Had to reflash my UEFI 2 or 3 times to restore, testing by trial and error to see what was bricking it. I DID get a warning when disabling CSM which I should have paid attention to, saying I required a vendor signed UEFI driver So only Fast Boot & Secure Boot disabled before install. Also, not sure about pros-cons of various live USB creation methods, but will stick with Rufus going forward.

That would be correct if you were doing an MBR install as it would install Grub boot code to the master boot record. You are not using MBR but rather UEFI so the sda1 (EFI partition) is correct. Your bootinfoscript output does not show any code in the MBR of the Ubuntu (1TB) drive which is also correct. No EFI files are shown in the output for sda1 but that doesn't necessarily mean they are not there. You can try mounting that vfat partition from the Ubuntu flash drive to verify.

sdb is the Ubuntu(?) flash drive you are using (14.6GB drive with an iso9660 filesystem).

Since both systems are UEFI, you should not have CSM/Legacy boot enabled. You'll have to check your Asus manual for that.
The grub.cfg file for Ubuntu on sda3 shows correct entries pointing to the respective EFI partitions on the different drives so that isn't the problem.

What happens when you have the 1TB drive with Ubuntu set to first boot priority? Either boot, neither?
If you can't resolve this, I would suggest you use the boot repair software from the site below on the Ubuntu flash drive and select the option to Create BootInfo Summary and post a link to it here. It should provide more info than the bootinfoscript.

According to the output quoted above, there is only one SSD and one mechanical drive. Ubuntu installed on the mechanical drive. If I have read properly, CSM was enabled, this may have resulted in a BIOS mode installation, which cannot be booted in UEFI mode.

Thanks but actually they are both SSD's, and yes, CSM was enabled(I can't boot without )

I believe that with my UEFI-BIOS, enabling CSM or Legacy boot only means that the firmware will always first attempt a UEFI boot and only fall back to BIOS if no UEFI partitions are found.
