Can't start X as non-root user. Please help!
 

Something (obviously) got screwed up with my X windows. I'm running
Mandrake 9.2 with the 2.6.0-test9 kernel. X comes up all right if I type startx from the command line as superuser. Doing this as a normal user, freezes the system.
Where can I look? Can somebody help walk me through this, please?

I'm having the same problems and no answers/replies. I'll monitoring this very closely. Actually mine dosn't freeze, it just won't let you pass/log-in. Hope someone will reply.

Perhaps there is a different XF86-config file for root starting with VESA mode

Or you might have screwed up Xserver permissions with chmod, don't know...

Or perhaps there is a service to launch before startx

I having the same problem using debian sarge kernel 2.6.0-test11 but the problem exist till i am
installing the system .
As root no problem at all but when i wont start X as user i cant acess .
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx : permission denied
i ve chmod startx but there is no change to get it work .
Have anyone a idear to get it work ?

did you check the permissions on the directories? if your non-root users can't access /usr/X11R6, say, then it doesn't matter what the permissions are on startx.

I don't know the answer, but you need to bear in mind that the 2.6 kernel is still in development. That means that whilst the version of the kernel you are using probably has few serious bugs, the way it interacts with all the extra bits Mandrake adds on probably does. This is simply because the good folks over at Mandrake will have been spending all their time getting the 2.4.22 kernel version working for Mandrake 9.2. The big effort on the 2.6 kernel will be starting now.

It might just be that you've hit a beta-test style bug and the solution is to raise it as a bug on the Mandrake site and hope that they fix it sometime soon.
