Can't send e-mail with Sylpheed

I get my e-mail fine but when I reply I always get error 550 relaying to xxxxx@domain.com prohibited by administrator

[00:34:21] SMTP< 220-emory.mail.atl.earthlink.net ESMTP Exim 3.33 #1 Tue, 02 Mar 2004 00:34:24 -0500
[00:34:21] SMTP< 220-NO UCE. EarthLink does not authorize the use of its computers or network
[00:34:21] SMTP< 220 equipment to deliver, accept, transmit, or distribute unsolicited e-mail.
[00:34:21] SMTP> HELO 66-152-36-157.ded.btitelecom.net
[00:34:21] SMTP< 250 emory.mail.atl.earthlink.net Hello 66-152-36-157.ded.btitelecom.net [66.152.36.157]
[00:34:21] SMTP> MAIL FROM: <xxxx@peoplepc.com>
[00:34:21] SMTP< 250 <xxxx@peoplepc.com> is syntactically correct
[00:34:21] SMTP> RCPT TO: <xxxxx@yahoo.com>
[00:34:21] SMTP< 550 relaying to <xxxxx@yahoo.com> prohibited by administrator
[00:34:21] ** warning: error occurred on SMTP session
[00:34:21] ** warning: Error occurred while sending the message.

This is a test message I tried to send myself. I guess I'm a little confused as to why the earthlink.net domain is on here. I am trying to switch over from Evolution to a lighterweight e-mail. Not sure how to get this working.

Hmmm, I'm going to ask the obvious: are the settings for the smtp server Earthlink provides correctly configured in Sylpheed? I am guessing you are using Earthlink for your ISP, correct? Not sure why Yahoo, PeoplePC and btitelecom are showing up as well.

Yeah see that's what I don't understand. I've set it up exactly like all the other programs I've used as far as my mail server info.

No clue what the Earthlink is, I use a small local company that caters to apartments called Mediaworks. That, I believe is where the 66-152-36-157.ded.btitelecom.net is coming from.

The peoplepc is the mailbox I use, like a 3rd party type. I used to use them for dial up and just kept the e-mail address as I didn't feel like sending out e-mails telling people I was changing it.

The Yahoo is my account I was sending a test message to check and see if it works.

Only thing I can think of is it's trying to use the Earthlink server as a relay but I went through all the settings and Earthlink doesn't appear anywhere in there.

Not sure what to tell you. The only thing I can think of is to have you use the smtp settings from btitelecom.net (your ISP), rather than the one at PeoplePC, to see if it works. I am guessing that's what you are doing, right - using the PeoplePC email service (smtp, pop3), but your actual ISP is btitelecom.net? If so, does that setup work with Evo? If it works with Evo, it should work with Sylpheed, in theory, at least!

Heh I guess I overlooked the simple things. When I set up Evolution it worked fine with the peoplepc for smtp but Sylpheed didn't like it. I just changed it over to btitelecom.net and it went out super fast.

Thanks!!

Glad you got it working! I switched form Evo to Sylpheed about a year ago because I was looking for the same thing you were: a light weight email client. I used Balsa for a while too, but I like Sylpheed better.

Yeah so far I like it, I like how it displays the e-mails in a tree system.

One other thing that you may know. I'm trying to turn off the 'message view' under 'view' -'show/hide'. Everytime I start it up the message view is back. I just don't like to automatically open e-mails. Do you know anyway to disable that?

This makes the message view disappear, and does not mark a message as read when clicked on:

On the right side of the bar (horizontal) that seperates the message list from the message view, there is a little triangle - to the right of where is says 0 read, 0 unread, 0 total. Click the triangle and the message view disappears. You will then have to double click a message to read it in a seperate window.

Hope that's what you are looking for!

p.s. I tried to do a screenshot, then use Gimp to show the portion you need to see, but I am Gimp stupid, so....

I noticed that too - sorry don't know how to make it not do that! Check out the local help, it may mention something about it. I always use the message view, so I never noticed that behavior. You are welcome for the help, my pleasure! That's what the open source community/Linux is all about.
