Can't run wireless with Ubuntu Ibex 8.10

[I have a Gateway M1625 laptop and I'm running a dual boot system,Ubuntu 8.04 CE and Vista Home Premium. When upgrading to Ubuntu Ibex 8.10, I automatically receive my Ethernet and my wireless both
automatically without having to hunt for drivers,I try to go online but have no luck. My system says,
I'm connected but can't even Ping anyone or anything, I just totally lose my wireless. Everything is
ok when I connect with the wire but I can't even find my printer server(Netgear PS121v2) without the
wired Ethernet.I thought to install a driver so I added NDISgtk, plus the driver it calls for and the
wrapper but still no luck. I hate to think I'm limited to 8.04 and would really appreciate any
help...Thanks]

In the terminal list your hardware with lshw (if this is installed, if not connect your ethernet and sudo apt-get install lshw first). This will list all of your hardware. Look under networking and see if your hardware is detected properly. If you don't like the commandline there is a GUI for hardware lister lshw-gtk.

You can also check to see if there is a driver available that isn't installed in Administration| Hardware Drivers. If there is one connect the ethernet and then install the wireless driver. If it is already enabled then you can proceed to troubleshoot why it isn't connecting. If not check out how to install a Windows driver using ndiswrapper in the tutorial in the first link below.

Let us know what you find and how you are making out.

FOLLOW UP:

First I want to thank you for the advise. I did what you said and when I got the information, I started searching and came up with a remedy...I have Verizon as an ISP, I called them up and had them reset my router to factory default settings, I then downloaded "NDISWrapper-common_1.52-1ubuntu1_all.deb",Iread in one of the ubuntu forums about a guy using a windows 98 driver
for the NIC I Have(Realtek 8189)the driver is a Realtek RTL8187b for windows 98(it has to be win98 nothing else works). I
installed them both and rebooted my system. As soon as my Desktop appeared, the wireless Icon showed and about ten seconds later I had 4 bars on the connection. The only problem I encountered was that I was having trouble when I started the WEP
encryption key, (Couldn't connect)so I eliminated the Wep Security and I enabled the MAC filtering and made the network
system invisible by disabling the broadcasting in the Router setup. Once more I'm in love with my IBEX 8.10 and want to thank everyone for their help...Luv yas all...Ancianoman
