Can't run Fedora installer on MacBook Pro

I have a MacBookPro5,1 system. I used a boot menu program name rEFIt to triple boot between Mac OS X 10.6, Fedora (64-bit), and Windows.

I want to upgrade my Fedora installation to version 15, however first I need to upgrade to version 14. I downloaded and burnt the DVD images for both version 14 and 15. I cannot get either version to run on the MacBook Pro.

When I try the version 14 installation, I get the menu asking me if I want to upgrade/install a new system, boot to local disc, run a rescue, etc. After select the upgrade some text will appear on the screen about loading and configuring and then the screen goes black and the system just sits there doing nothing.

When I try the version 15 installation, I get the same menu as before. I select upgrade. Again the loading and configuration text appears on the screen, and then the system just sits there with a message about waiting for the hardware to initialize.

I tested the version 14 DVD on another system, and it will get past this stage of the installation to where it will prompt to test the installation media, so I assume the DVD is fine and would actually install properly on a system. I suspect the version 15 DVD is fine to, as I have never had any problem with any installation DVD's I've even burnt.

I suspect the problem has to do with the interaction between the setup program and the Macintosh.

What can I do so that I can upgrade my Linux installation on this system?

Ideally you shouldn't upgrade (this may change in the future) but have you tried 'preupgrade' ? .. I suspect this will fail also, from memory it adds an entry to /boot/grub/menu.lst but may be worth a try. Does refit chainload grub or support linux directly ?

How do I try preupgrade?

I found that if I choose the basic video driver option from the install menu instead of the upgrade/install option the install will get pass the hardware initialization and go to the media testing.

I'm not sure this if this would allow me to upgrade. What would happen if I did this type of installation?

I think rEFIt does chainload to grub as I usually get a list of kernels to boot into when I choose Linux from the rEFIt menu

have you read the fedora documentation
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/index.html ?

but going from 13 to 15 ????? might ? maybe? sort of ? work
maybe

a clean fresh NEW install is still the best if you skip a version

and seeing as there have been SO MANY changes from 13 to 15
i would only give "preupgrade" a 50/50% chance
but the 15 install dvd can upgrade

Might try a virtual machine.

http://download.virtualbox.org/virtu...-72479-OSX.dmg

Easy, fast, safe. Near, at or above native speeds.

On another machine I had good luck upgrading from 12 to 14. I'm not have as much luck upgrading from 14 to 15 on that machine. Virtual Machine will not work well for me. I need to have OpenGL acceleration for the development I'm doing.

What kind of installation does the basic video driver option do?

the current fedora uses the open source "nouveau" driver
that was a major change since 12

might want to read the release notes

Since I can't seem to the get the installer to run properly from a DVD, I'm wondering if I could perform the upgrade through YUM. I found this site which talks about it. It sounds like the best approach might be to upgrade to each version 13, 14, and then 15.

How well do people think this will work?

i would not
an educated guess is 13 to 14 a 50/50% chance
14 to 15 a 25% chance of it working

fedora made some VERY drastic changes in 15
it might work but i give going from 13 to 15 a 15% chance of working without you having MAJOR issues that you would need to fix by hand

In an effort to upgrade to Fedora 13 through YUM I was trying to follow the steps outlined on this website.

I executed these commands:

Quote:
rpm --import https://fedoraproject.org/static/E8E40FDE.txt
yum update yum
yum clean all
yum --releasever=13 distro-sync
And now I get this error when I try to use YUM:

Quote:
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again
What can be done so that YUM will work properly again?
