I just installed openSUSE 10.2 and am a newbie, I backed up my data when running windows onto some DVD's (both + and - rw). Some of the discs work, but some show no files or folders within them. I run into no error messages of any kind, simply when i open the folder to see the files, it shows nothing, and yet when I view properties it shows the disk to be full of 4.2 gbs.
In fact, I even copied all the data from the disc as .iso file onto my desktop, and when I select ISO9660 view, it opens a folder that does indeed show the data is in tact, unfortunately I still cannot open some of my mp#'s or mpg files from this, but some pdf's work.
I am pretty good about tinkering around and getting things to work, but I'd like to get access to those files rather quickly, so any help woul dbe appreciated. I posted here because I figured this is some kind of software/codec problem, not a hardware problem, seeing as how I have had no trouble reading other DVDs/CDs.
so I did dmesg, and after scrolling through tons of text I did find several errors including the I/O error you mentioned. I also saw things like error: illegal request, command error, a whole bunch of stuff. This error section was somewhere in the middle of all that text, but the ends and beginnings of what showed up looked like nothing was wrong, and there was a lot of text that did look alright. So, what next? Thanks by the way.
so my drive is under media:/hda, so I typed in dmesg | grep hda
I then got the following:

I said I was able to rip the .iso off the disc, save that to my hard drive. Then, I right click and select ISO9660 view. This allows me to see the contents of the .iso file, and I can even open a couple of pdf files from within that, which shows me the data is alright. However, files like mp3 and mpg just don't open. It might say source file does not exist or that it just can't open the file.
I just tested it as I am writing, and I can open some aac files (music) and even .avi (I opened Kill Bill Vol 1, a large file, and it seems to be intact).
Therefore, I am sure the disc itself is alright, and I know my drive is working because it has been reading other dvd's, so hopefully the posted text from the command you gave helps. Again thank you.
that looks like a disc with a smudge or dust on it. It's failing to read at the exact spot every time. I would try to clean in with soft cotton starting in the center and wiping outward to the edge (never in a circle.) hopefully that will clear it up. It's also possible that when it was burned the burner slipped-up at that spot and didn't write that sector correctly. You could try making a duplicate of that disc (it has worked for me). That wouldn't correct it if it was a burn issue though.
You might try to extract all the data out of the ISO into another folder. I have also had issues opening files in an ISO image without first extracting them. You could try to mount the iso with:
I checked the disc, and saw no smudges of any kind. I entered the following command to the .iso file:
Code:
mount hp_1206_dvd2.iso /mnt/isotmp -o loop
When I did this and checked that directory, the file showed it contained no files or folders, but 344 bytes; but, it still showed that the size of the disc was 4.2 gb.
I enetered the command you said,
Code:
mount -o loop -t iso9660 file.iso /mnt/test
but that just gave me:
Usage: mount -V : print version
mount -h : print this help
mount : list mounted filesystems
mount -l : idem, including volume labels
So far the informational part. Next the mounting.
The command is `mount [-t fstype] something somewhere'.
Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted.
mount -a [-t|-O] ... : mount all stuff from /etc/fstab
mount device : mount device at the known place
mount directory : mount known device here
mount -t type dev dir : ordinary mount command
Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts
a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device.
One can also mount an already visible directory tree elsewhere:
mount --bind olddir newdir
or move a subtree:
mount --move olddir newdir
A device can be given by name, say /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom,
or by label, using -L label or by uuid, using -U uuid .
Other options: [-nfFrsvw] [-o options] [-p passwdfd].
For many more details, say man 8 mount .
I will have access to MS windows on Monday so later in the day I might see if the disc works on the operatin gsystem it was originally created on. I'll keep you posted.
A different thought -- did you burn the DVD as an ISO image? A regular copy or drag&drop won't work. You have to specifically choose the "Burn as an Image" option.
When I burned the original DVD, I burned it as a data DVD, so all the files were actually there on the disc...not as an .iso file. When I couldn't read anything, I decided to copy over everything to my desktop as an .iso file, and then work with it from there.
Thanks to all that helped; thanks Benanzo for starting the replies. I tried looking at the disc on a windows computer and the same thing happens, which shows me the disc must not have burned properly. To clarify, when I burned the disc I used Sonic to record, and I did NOT burn an .iso file, I burned the several hundred files: mp3, mpg, pdf, doc, ... as data onto the DVD. I made about 6 discs like this and so far all the others have worked, unfortunately the one that doesn't work was my most important because it has my physics labs on it.
I would like to know if there are any special data recovery programs for DVD discs, because as I mentioned in prior posts, somehow I copied all the data from the what seems to be an unfinished DVD as a .iso file. Once copied, I have been able to use opensuse 10.2 to right click on the file and select something called view as ISO 9660, which then allows me to not only see what individual files are there, but also open some of them (ranging from pdf documents, to music, to even a 700mb Kill Bill vol I file)...
Sorry for the rambling, but this is what I need: a disc recovery program, and how to use it.
Most of the data I can re-download, but some of my school work obviously cannot be duplicated so easily.
