Unhappy Can't play Gnome Sound events

Hi,
I have gentoo setup on my Satellite M30 laptop. Am having tough time figuring out this problem. I have installed alsa and related stuff and sound in general is working properly. Xmms plays, totem works, realplayer works. Moreover all the three can play at the same time.
However, I can't get GNOME event sounds to work. ESD is started. I have selected ALSAMIXER in my "Multimedia Systems Selector" settings. When I open the following menu:

DESKTOP===>Preferences===>Sound

and try to play any event, no sound comes out. Can anybody please suggest something.

Thanks a ton.

same problem

I'm sorry to say, that I am experiencing the same problem.
Sound (BMP, Xine etc) works fine, gnome sound events don't and theres no support for the sound in most games (gnome default and others doom3 etc)

I have an Idea so, maybe its got something todo with the USE-Flags that all applications "use" at compile time ?

I'm using gnome 2.10.2 under gentoo.
I'm not shure if 2.12 is stable yet
