can't open mozilla without root permission

i have a fresh install of slackware 10 on my box... so far, i've been unable to open mozilla without changing to root. if i try to run the command from the terminal, i get:
Code:
bash-2.05b$ mozilla
*** Registering -webcal handler.
*** Registering text/calendar handler.
*** Registering webcal protocol handler.
and then nothing happens.

if i try clicking on the icon in gnome, it just plain doesn't open.

the mozilla binary has execute permissions for users, obviously.

mozilla came as a package with the distro--before i realized that it was having trouble opening, i was trying to figure out how to uninstall it so i could switch to mozilla firefox, actually. so thats a question too.

thanks.

You could try 'strace mozilla' to see where it's getting stuck, but it might not help very much. Switching to Firefox is easy, just go to the download page, get the software, run the install script, and you're done.

PMFJI - I had a similar problem both with mozilla and firefox under Redhat FC2. Both displayed some pages properly, but after loading other pages from the web they terminated silently without any error message. I already deinstalled and reinstalled everything using apt-get, I even deleted my profile directory, disabled javascript/java and everything - nothing helped.

Then I saw your valuable suggestion to use strace. This tool revealed what happens: Shortly before exiting, mozilla had troubles to access some font files. In fact, I had installed some additional fonts in /usr/share/fonts as root recently but forgot to adjust the permissions properly for other users. After fixing these permissions, now everything works.

Thanks again, you helped me a lot.

Regards
Marcel

I"m having the same problem myself. I installed Slack 10 on a pc in the office and normal (unpriviliged) users cannot launch mozilla. when logged on as a regular user (in Gnome) the user selects mozilla from Applications==>Internet==>Mozilla....

I see the 'inviisible expanding window that flashes across the screeen whenever you launch something, but then Mozilla never comes up. It is running when I do a 'ps auxww' though.....

Is there something to set that is real simple in the users .mozila directory or something that enables Mozilla to run? Perhaps chmod of some files or something?

If I su to root in a terminal window and then invoke 'mozilla' from there as root, it runs fine (but I certainly don't want users to be able to do that).

Thanks.
