Can't login as root or users

I'm running Fedora 10 and my server has crashed. I tried to reboot it and log in and now I can't log in as a normal user or as root. The majority of the file system is ether on a Raid or on logical volume. The password file should be on a logical volume.

Is there any way to recover the system?

I have been trying to boot with Knoppix but it keeps hanging up.

Your best bet is to boot from a Fedora install CD, go into "rescue" mode, and try to figure out what's wrong.

I was able to boot into single user mode with GRUB. I was able to remove the password for root so I can login and edit files and fix things but I'm not sure what to look at first.

If I try to login as anyone other than root I get this error before the password prompt.

Code:
type=1400 audit(1257642438.946:75 avc: denied {read } for pid=2540
comm="unix_chkpwd" name="nsswitch.conf" dev=dm-0 ino=12017735
scontext=system_r:system_chkpwd_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023
tcontext=system_u:object_r:etc_runetime_t:s0 tclass=file

I'm not sure what broke in the first place but I disables SElinux rebooted then re-enabled it and rebooted it again and seams to be working fine.
