Angry can't login

I've had RH9 installed and running fine for about 2 months now. I've actually been pretty happy with it and got rid of windows permanently! But yesterday I ran into an enormous problem, I can't login! I typed my username and password and it says "authentication failed"! I tried changing my password by typing e at the grub screen and then going to the second line and typing e and then typing space single after that. Everything worked fine. It told me I could change my password and I did. But when I rebooted and tried to login, it said "authentication failed" again. I was thinking that maybe my username also was changed. How do I change or find out what my username is. I'm using Knoppix if that helps! Thanks!

Usernames (and other things) are in the /etc/passwd file.
User passwords are stored in /etc/shadow
Group information => /etc/group
Group passwords => /etc/gshadow
