So I have proftp running with this config file:

Now, I've changed PersistentPasswd to on and off to no avail. I've also changed AuthPAMAuthoritative to on/off to no avail.

Basically, I can't log into the damn ftp server with any account.
I use my username with any ftp application under passive mode AND non passive and the damn thing always rejects the login.

Here's the output of every attempt to log in:

What gives? I've checked the /etc/pam.d/ftp file and it seems kosher. I've checked the /etc/passwd file and it seems kosher.
I've checked everything that the documentation has directed me too and I can't make it work.

The only fishy thing I can think of is that when trying to change my account password via the passwd command, I get this output:

passwd
Changing password for user bznutz.
Changing password for bznutz
(current) UNIX password:
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error


What in the Hell is going on?

Please help, I really need this ftp to be up so I can update my website while I'm out of town.

that sounds suspicious,

try changing you password using the root account

login as root, type:

su

at the command prompt, and enter the password when requested, once logged in as root, type:

passwd <user>

where <user> is your username

or you could try adding a different user

also check your /var/log/messages file ( you need to be root to read it ) what are the last few lines after an unsuccessful login?

i know when i make a new user account on my server (also proftpd) when i try to log in it fails, but when i change the password, and then try again it works, and also i have to make use the ftpclient is not using passive mode...did you try both these options?
