can't log in to mysql

I'm using debian 3.1 testing. I am logged in as root. I installed mysql with:

aptitude install mysql-server

I don't remember setting up any user or password, or anything of that nature.

in the /etc/mysql/my.cnf file, there is a line that reads: user = mysql. So, I guess the username is "mysql" I've also tried root. I've tried with and without passwords.

I've tried changing the password with the passwd command. It doesn't help. I've also tried uninstalling, and reinstall mysql - twice. That doesn't help either.

I am using the following line to log in:

mysql myhost -u mysql -p

I keep getting this error:

ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'mysql@localhost' (Using password: YES)

Any ideas?

Don't specify localhost.

It will use the local socket if you do and your auth problem should go away

otherwise, try mysqladmin password newpasswordhere

I think you dont have a password set unless you actually set one. Default username is mysql or mysqluser i think. But if i would advise you to go and install webmin. It great frontend for a whole bunch of stuff including mysql.
